Artist Statement
Rooted in the beauty of the southwest, my work is a reflection of the intricate connections between people, place and relationship. The vast open skies, desert landscapes and textured earth inspire my nature based and abstract fiber pieces that invite awareness to how we shape and are shaped by the emotional, physical, and cultural environments we are in.
I work primarily in tapestry and mixed media blending traditional weaving and embroidery techniques with my background in visual communication design. I am drawn to the time intensive nature of fiber work and the gesture of care, memory and presence that the work involves often incorporating found items and materials. My abstract work explores the invisible threads that tie us to one another and the land—connection, tension, belonging, and loss. My nature work responds directly to the rhythms and forms of the desert—its vast skies, mountains, and flora and the quiet stories etched into it’s surfaces. My goal is not to recreate the desert, but translate what it teaches to offer space to connect and contemplate the beauty we so find when we take the time to look.
